World Bank Job Vacancy 2025

The World Bank Ethiopia Country Office is hiring Ethiopia.  The positions are based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and open to Ethiopian nationals.

The World Bank on-going energy portfolio and pipeline of projects in Ethiopia include support for power sector reforms; investment projects on power transmission, distribution, and grid electrification; solar mini grids & standalone solar systems for households and communities; clean cooking and improved cook stoves; and interconnection with neighboring countries as part of the efforts to bring Ethiopia connected to the regional electricity network. 

Position 1: Financial Sector Specialist

Selection Criteria:

This position requires a Financial Sector Specialist with broad experience on financial stability, financial inclusion and financial sector deepening and a sound understanding of the Ethiopian context.

The position also requires excellent client relationship experience. He/she will also have demonstrated experience delivering results on the ground with prior work experience with international organizations or donors.

The following qualifications are required:

  • Masters level or equivalent qualification with minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience in the areas of finance, business, management, economics or related discipline.
  • The ideal candidate should have solid experience in financial stability and broad knowledge of other areas related to financial inclusion and financial deepening and the important contribution of the financial sector to SME development and growth.
  • Experience in designing and implementing lending operations and leading core analytical ASAs focused on financial sector development is desired.
  • Familiarity with World Bank Group products, policies and procedures, as well as Trust Funds.
  • Proven capacity to engage and influence policy discussions at the country level on financial sector development.
  • Possess strong internal and external client engagement skills and ability to collaborate and work across boundaries.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with IFC, development partners and across the Prosperity vertical on key analytical and lending operations.
  • Work experience in Ethiopia and the broader Africa region would be an added advantage.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills in English.

Position 2: Lead Economist

Selection Criteria:

  • Ph.D degree in economics with at least twelve (12) years of relevant professional experience, including a track record of delivery of high quality analytical and advisory products. 
  • Strong analytical skills in macroeconomic and fiscal management as well as economic growth analysis.
  • Proven ability to conduct policy-relevant research.
  • Proven experience in leading high impact development policy operations; sound knowledge of Bank lending tools and procedures.
  • Integrative capacity including the ability to situate sectoral issues within a broader development framework.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex analyses to non-specialist audiences.
  • Strong client-orientation and diplomatic skills combined with candor and courage of opinion.
  • Ability to work flexibly on a range of assignments and adjust to a variety of complex evolving tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Entrepreneurial capabilities that can be deployed in identifying and securing new business opportunities.
  • High energy and demonstrated interest in achieving impact through analytical work and technical assistance for demanding and sophisticated clients.  Previous experience in delivering high impact work in a country under economic transformation or experience with countries in transition to a market economy would be a plus.

Position 3: Sr. Environmental Specialist

Selection Criteria:

It is expected that the successful candidate will meet the following selection criteria:

The following are required:

  • Advanced degree (PhD or Masters) in environmental/natural sciences or environmental/civil engineering.
  • A minimum of 8 years of full-time relevant professional experience in environmental management, with experience in the management of the environmental, social, health and safety risks of large infrastructure projects, extractive or industrial activities, and the application of WBG ESF and safeguard policies, including in the preparation of WBG environmental safeguard/risk management documents.
  • Technical experience in the management of the environmental, social, health and safety risks of large infrastructure, e.g. roads and highways, dams, irrigation schemes and large water conveyance systems, would be highly beneficial.
  • Demonstrated project management/operational skills, including occupational health and safety management and experience working with contractors with weak implementation capacity.
  • Ability to work well with a range of stakeholders, including project-affected parties, government officials, non-governmental organizations / civil society, as well as project investors and their staff. Experience in capacity building for environmental, health and safety risk management would be beneficial.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Diplomatic approach and ability to work under pressure.
  • Experience working in developing countries, understanding the institutional and political context and exposure to the national environmental policy challenges. Experience working in FCV countries would be beneficial.
  • Fluency in English is required (writing, speaking, listening and reading).
  • Good analytical skills, ability to think strategically, analyze and synthesize diverse qualitative and quantitative environmentally related data and information.
  • Willingness to travel extensively in Ethiopia, including to remote rural areas.
