The Embassy of Canada in Ethiopia would like to invite qualified and experienced candidates for the following position.

Position: African Union Political Specialist

Education:  

  • Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a field related to the position (e.g. political science, public administration, international affairs, economics, etc)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experiences in managing stakeholder and partner relationships;
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant and significant experience working for an international or diplomatic organization; and
  • Experience organizing events, high-level visits and/or advocacy activities. 

Language:

  •  Advanced level in English (written and spoken)
  •  Advanced level in French (written and spoken)  

Under the general supervision of the Head of the African Union Commission Liaison Unit in the    Embassy of Canada, the African Union Political Specialist will be responsible for: 

  • Providing strategic advice on advancing Canadian objectives in Africa through engagement with the African Union (AU), its Member States, and key stakeholders and partners; 
  • Building strong rapport and maintaining networks, and serving as a liaison and strategic point of contact within the Mission;
  • Drafting strategic reports, notes, emails and general correspondence related to AU matters and communications;
  • Supporting the Mission to plan and manage official visits and events;
  • Supporting policy and programming coherence by establishing and maintaining strong rapport with cross-program Embassy staff and headquarters  stakeholders;
  • Providing foreign policy and diplomatic services with regards to the AU, including La Francophonie and the Commonwealth; 
  • Building and maintaining cultural affairs networks and linkages;
  • Developing and implementing public diplomacy strategies, including social media engagement; and
  •  Other duties as required. 

The AU Political Specialist will also be responsible for providing strategic support, including but not limited to administration, logistics, coordination and network building, based on the Mission’s priorities, described as follows: 

  • Promote Canada’s visibility and image through outreach to the AU, its Member State Missions, media, civil society and networks, and collaborating with Canadian Missions across the continent; 
  • Promote Canada’s economic cooperation, trade and prosperity objectives, including by liaising with the AU, as well as the Canada-Africa Business Council and interested private sector parties as required; 
  • Advance strategies to collaborate with the AU, Member States and partners on African continental goals; 
  •  Support the management of the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI)programming envelope; 
  • Provide information and advice concerning the AU to Canadian departments and agencies, as well as provincial/territorial government representatives, private sector organizations, and visiting and expatriate Canadians; and 
  • Support the preparation of an annual report on Canada’s engagement and priorities with the AU, in close collaboration with Canadian missions, in order to contribute to Canadian efforts and priorities.
